What is your life full of?
How would you describe your life?
Is your life full of happiness and joy? Is it full of laughter and light? Or is it full of struggle and fear, sadness and darkness? Which way does the meter tend to point?
In my book, Soul Primer, I write “What I fill my life with is what my life will be full of.”
So the question really is, “What do YOU fill your life with?”
As a Shamanic practitioner, I have learned to “shut the door” to negative and dark energies. And yes, there are actual negative and dark energies out there. When I do spirit work or journeying, I literally invite “good and beneficial spirits” to visit or help me. When I enter the spirit world, I specifically shut the door behind me to exclude bad and harmful spirits.

We make choices every day that swing the door one way or another. The media we listen to, the movies we watch, the people we spend time with, even the physical items we fill our homes with – all of these alter our energy and tilt the dark/light meter.
Some of you may remember the movie “The Bird Box.” I normally don’t watch horror or scary movies, but everyone was raving about it, and I thought, “Why not?” The premise of “The Bird Box” is that the world is overrun with spirits who cause people to commit suicide. All it takes is for a human to look at them (the spirits) to be irrevocably driven into suicidal despair. If you close your door and close your eyes to them, they cannot hurt you. But if you leave the door open….
I remember, after watching this movie, being in a dark funk. Seriously, for several days I felt so depressed and, well, kinda hopeless. It was so unlike me. Still, I didn’t connect it to the movie (at that time, I had not yet drawn such a clear connection between my soul health and the movies/music/media I feed myself).
But then, I realized that watching that scary movie had “left my door open” to negative energy. Do dark movies, videos, music, books, and games darken our spirit? Absolutely. Is hanging out with negative/angry/violent people leaving the door open? Yep. Is constant consumption of sensationalist media about greed/hate/devastation allowing those energies into your life? I would argue yes.
There are so many ways to open ourselves up to “bad spirits,” and our society has become so good at normalizing those experiences that we don’t even stop to think about them. Of course, we all have different sensitivities and different tolerance thresholds. What invades the psyche of one may not seem to have much impact on another. And yet, look at the rates of depression and anxiety in our modern world. Clearly, there are some bad spirits making mischief in the open doors of our lives.
I suggest it is wise to “shut the door” to those things that do not serve us well. We must close our eyes – and ears – to things that feed our anxieties and prey on our fears. Undoubtedly, there are those who would scoff at the idea of bad spirits as superstitious. You can rename it “bad practice” if that makes more sense to you but, whatever you call it, there is no doubt that we humans have become addicted to dark and violent games, movies, music, news, and activities. We are hooked on things that give us a little adrenalin jolt, regardless of how unhealthy they may be.
Regular exposure to bad spirits/bad practices creates a need for more, like any addiction. In “The Bird Box,” the crazy psychos of the world are immune to the suicidal despair that the spirits cause in the rest of humanity. Presumably, they are immune because they have been living with (“addicted to”) the bad spirits for years, as close friends and allies. In the movie, the psychos insanely want everyone to see the “beauty” of the evil and they force others to participate in seeing them, rejoicing when the subject individual then destroys himself.
That is not the world we want to create for ourselves or our children.
There is an antidote to too much exposure to negative/bad/evil inputs: regular doses of light and communing with the benevolent love of the universe. This is why I meditate. I regularly practice flooding my being with light through my crown chakra. With every breath in, I breathe in light, with every breath out, I release all that does not serve me well. I return my focus to that which is good and light and beautiful.
If you, too, would like to see your life – and our world – filled with light and beauty and love, then join me in closing the door to the “bad spirits” that seek to create a sense of hopelessness, and to destroy the good in mankind. Be always conscious of who/what you let into your life. Fill your days and consciousness with light, with meditation, communing with nature, and other practices. Spread the light to others so that our whole world brightens. We have the choice, every day and every moment to choose light over dark.

Despite the dark clouds that seem to be gathering right now, I see a great gathering of light beings also building up in size and energy. So, keep the faith, keep up with the light practices, and keep holding light for others to follow. There is a brighter world ahead. If enough of us choose to bring it forth….
With love, Cate
